Ephesians 1:7

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”

Context

Paul opens Ephesians 1 with one long, powerful sentence (verses 3–14) describing the blessings believers have in Christ. By verse 7, he focuses on the heart of salvation — redemption and forgiveness. Ephesus was a wealthy trade city, known for business, idol worship, and the massive temple of Artemis. In that culture, slavery, debt, and ransom were daily realities. Paul uses that imagery to explain a spiritual truth: Jesus paid the price to free us from sin’s ownership. This verse forms the center of Paul’s theology — everything we have in Christ is rooted in His blood and His grace.

Cultural & Historical Insight

  • In the Roman world, redemption (apolutrōsis) was a marketplace term meaning the release of a slave after the payment of a ransom price.

  • To Paul’s readers, this word would have evoked the image of a slave standing at an auction — then hearing that someone had paid the full price for their freedom.

  • Under Jewish law, blood sacrifice was required to cover sin (Leviticus 17:11). But those sacrifices had to be repeated year after year.

  • Jesus’ blood, however, didn’t just cover sin temporarily — it removed it completely (Hebrews 9:12).

Hidden Truth

This verse holds the full gospel in a single line:

  • Redemption — Freedom from something (sin, guilt, death).

  • Forgiveness — Cleansing of something (our trespasses).

  • Grace — The reason why it’s possible (God’s unearned love).

Every chain of the past is broken not by effort, but by blood — the ultimate price of love.

And the measure of that redemption?

“According to the riches of His grace.”
Not out of His riches (as though God gave a portion), but according to — in full proportion to His limitless abundance.

Application

  • Stop living like a slave who’s already been freed.
You’ve been purchased — you belong to freedom now.

  • Don’t carry what grace already canceled.
    Forgiveness isn’t partial; it’s complete.

  • Live “according to His riches,” not your scarcity.
Grace never runs out; it runs over.

❤️ Prayer

“Lord, thank You for redeeming me by Your blood. Help me live as one who is truly free — not bound by guilt, fear, or my past. Let Your grace define my worth and shape my walk. Amen.”

🌅 Reflection Thought

You were not bought at a discount; you were bought at a cross.
The ransom was costly, but love considered it worth it. What are you holding onto today that has you bound?
